How are x-rays produced and what are the rules that govern this process? (Radiography 1- 1st part of 6 hours radiography CPD)

Aim(s): To deliver an overview of ionising radiation and the radiation protection rules that govern radiography in dentistry for DCPs to gain the understanding that the GDC recommends.

Objectives: By the end of the session you should be able to:

  • Outline the main components of Ionising Radiation Regulations IRR1999 and IR(ME)R 2000 and state the changes brought in with the new updates

  • Identify the impact of this legislation on General Dental Practice

  • Explain what happens inside the x-ray tube head to produce x-rays

  • Describe the nature and effects of ionising radiation

  • List and describe the types of radiobiological damage that can occur to the body

  • List properties of x-rays

  • Identify considered best practice

Learning outcomes: DCPs will be updated in their knowledge of the regulations regarding radiography in general dental practice and will be able to take this knowledge to their place of work and use it to implement day to day practice.

GDC Standards: 1.1, 1.4, 1.9, 3.1, 6.1, 6.4, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3
