About the Bath and West Scheme

Bath is one of England's most beautiful, elegant and historic cities, full of spectacular architecture, Georgian streets and has lovely surrounding countryside. It is also a fun place to spend time as it is a vibrant University city.

The experienced and friendly trainers are there to provide the level of support that you need throughout your first year, enabling you to make the transition from working in a dental school to independent practice. A number of the trainers work part time at Bristol Dental Hospital and many have done a postgraduate clinical teaching course. It is not all work and no play and we organise some good social events throughout the year!

The study days are held at the Royal United Hospital Bath; the majority of practices are within a radius of 30 miles of Bath but a few are further away. Some of the practices are in small rural towns and while there is some public transport, it is often pretty limited and to be independent you may feel it essential to have your own transport.

The first term’s study days are aimed at helping the newly qualified dentist put into practice clinical skills already learnt and developing confidence in planning the wide range of treatments likely to be needed by patients in general practice. The term ends with a 3 day residential course at Centre Parcs with the other schemes from the South West.

The second term continues to develop clinical skills but also covers the legislative and financial aspects of general dental practice. Throughout the year there are hands on courses in Endodontics, oral surgery and restorative dentistry which are always really popular study days. Many of the FDs use the year to work toward passing the MJDF examination.
