Curriculum

 

Expectations

The trainee should develop:

  • a consultant approach
  • an interest in continuing education
  • an interest in teaching and teaching skills, 
  • a continued interest in research methods and techniques, 
  • a responsible attitude and commitment to the training of hospital staff 
  • experience and knowledge of NHS management 
  • and an interest in professional activity 

Research

Active participation in research is welcomed. However, there will be considerable time pressures on you during training and large projects are usually impractical.
You may consider:

  • undertaking a small project
  • playing a specific part in a larger scale project
  • preparing papers for publication – case reports, review articles etc

Publications

As well as aiming to publish in peer reviewed journals you should aim to publish audit(s) in the Clinical Effectiveness Bulletin and act as a reviewer for this publication. You may have the opportunity to review papers for other peer reviewed journals.

Teaching

You should attend a course which covers educational theory and practical teaching skills at some point in your training. There is access to the Certificate of Teaching and Learning for Health Care Professionals at the University of Bristol (self funded)

You should try to gain experience in teaching to as many groups as possible e.g.:

  • Undergraduates
  • Postgraduates

In as many formats as possible e.g.:

  • One-to one
  • Seminars
  • Larger lectures

Workplace Based Assessments (WBA’s)

You should complete an annual total of 24 WBA’s during your NTN training, and an annual total of 12 at FTTA level. These should cover a wide range of topics.

ISCP contains different types of WBA’s which may be useful depending on your level of training including:

  • Observation of teaching (OoT)
  • Assessment of Audit (AoA)

Multisource Feedback (MSF)

  • You should complete your first MSF within the first 6 months of training
  • You should then aim to complete another MSF each year of training

Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP)

We will try to arrange an interim ARCP around 6 months after you start. You will have a full ARCP in each training year.

Logbook

Your logbook can be in any format. Most trainees use TOPAS or a similar Microsoft Access or Excel database. However, you must ensure that you are able to extract a minimum dataset for your Educational Appraisals and ARCPs.

Additional logbook

It can also be helpful to keep a logbook of ‘interesting’ cases you have seen (but are not necessarily treating)
Examples include patients:

  • with dental anomalies 
  • medical issues which affect management

By adding notes to this logbook you can develop a useful revision aid for the clinical exam.

Visiting other units

Visiting other units can be valuable. You are encouraged to make arrangements to do this. This can help you decide what is important to you when applying for FTTA posts and Consultant posts.
